Milwaukee-based Diego moonlights as a photographer who documents comedy, live music, and arts scenes.
Mission
Through 2023 my primary goal is to keep supporting local live arts through performance and documentary photography. My photography of live music and comedy is always offered in earnest to support the community and network of artists working to promote themselves and make a living from their craft.
Style
My artistic style is heavily inspired by both contemporary street photography as well as the home photography of the late 1990s and early 2000s. In an effort to refrain from strict portraiture and editing styles, my favorite form of expression in photography is through documentary. In this way I aim to capture my life and the lives of those in my immediate world (family, friends, and passerby) as members of an ongoing narrative and future history.
About Me
Coming from a family who always photographed events, my childhood home has been full of albums for as long as I can remember. My first time venturing into photography was in high school with a Sony Cybershot. My style has always been highly documentary, focusing on family and friends often in goofy and candid poses. At one point my style got highly experimental, saturating and color adjusting images until they were no longer recognizable. Slowly I got away from the point-and-shoot camera and ventured into purely iPhone photography practicing composition and honing in on certain subject matter. However, in a world of influencers and thousand dollar cameras I never really felt like a photographer. That’s changed now.
As a self-taught photographer with nothing to lose, I have constantly ventured into different styles and subject areas. Although I prefer the urban landscape my work has become much more performance specific. With a wariness for highly edited material, I try to capture subjects in an “as-it-was” state; reflecting the reality of the world we live in to give validity to our everyday experiences and situations.
